Exercise for digital painting. Firstly, the sketch was drawn with pencil on brown, textured paper.
The sketch was scanned and transferred. I opened it with Photoshop and played around with the levels to bring out the colour and texture of the paper more. I think traced over the initial drawing using the graphics tablet, and began roughly filling in different colours and tonal values.
I like this technique. The qualities and textures of paper really adds something to an illustration.
To start with, I could not decide what picture of myself would be best for this.
It’s always slightly awkward using yourself as the subject, especially if you’re noticeable.
Anyway, I decided on this:
Self Portrait-Original Image
Observing and Matching Colour Shading using the pipette tool
Beginning to fill and blend
I’m pleased with this too, but it could be better . . . I think I prefer it at the stage when it was filled in.
I need to practice digital painting more, but it’s very time consuming, so I’ll try it out when I have a bit more free time on my hands.
Today I finally found some free time to spend trying out this tablet properly. I did a couple of poor sketches first, as I had to get used to the slippery feeling of pen on the tablet. In the end, I decided to treat the drawing like any other, and just started sketching.
After an an hour or so, the sketch was done. I fixed up the edges using the eraser tool. Once you get used to it, it’s pretty fun to use. And avoids the hassle of cleaning up afterwards. I like it.
After I took this screen shot, I added the design into the hairband, and coloured it in. I didn’t attempt to shade or blend colours into one another just as yet.
I’m pretty pleased with the results 🙂 Next mission: Shading
The aim behind this assignment is to market ourselves online, as well as improve our digital application skills.
For the first task, we were asked to create a sphere, just a basic exercise on how to shade.
Shading Sphere Experiment
The next task was to create a digital self-portrait. My first attempt is too embarrassing to upload, so here’s the second attempt..
